Fire and Water Mains

HMAS Cairns

Location: Portsmith, North Queensland
Client: CPB Contractors Defence Australia
Start Date: November 2023
End Date: November 2024
Value: $8.7m

About the Project:

This project involved the installation, upgrade and commissioning of the Fire and Potable Water Ring mains within the HMAS Cairns Defence base.

Project Scope

The scope of works for this project includes:

  • Conversion of existing water main to a fire main.
  • Installation of new hydrants within the base.
  • Replacement of Sewer pit and pumpstation lids.
  • Installation of GPT baskets within storm water pits.
  • Construction of concrete structures for a new fire tank and pump housing.
  • Other associated works.

Key Challenges and Solutions

  • Management of contaminated material (PFAS & PASS) required strict testing, onsite storage & drying procedures and transportation to off-site facilities for disposal. The permit and approval process was very time consuming and highly regulated.
  • Working within a secure Defence site, with specific ac cess and security requirements.
  • Exceptional amount of existing underground services to prove and work around, including sensitive communications cables and equipment, that required a significant amount of Non Destructive Digging (NDD) via Vac Truck.

Achievements

  • Operated within a secure Defence site under strict access protocols.
  • Managed removal and disposal of PFAS- and PASS contaminated materials.
  • Maintained pedestrian and vehicle access to ensure uninterrupted base operations.
  • Installed 1,200m of HDPE water/fire mains, including 600m via underground bore.
  • Worked collaboratively with CBP, Defence, and contractors to meet program targets and minimise operational impacts.
